THEY INSISTED SHE PAY

A pregnant woman carrying twins died in India last month after a charity hospital denied her admission when she couldn’t pay ₹10 lakh in advance (approximately $11,623). “As per the scheme for charitable hospitals under the Bombay Public Trust Act,” said an official government report on the death, “in an emergency, the patient must be admitted immediately and provided life-saving treatment until stabilized.” The woman and her family begged the hospital to admit the woman, who was bleeding heavily, to begin treatment while they arranged funds. The hospital refused and insisted upon payment first. After five hours, the family transported her to another hospital, but after giving birth to twins, the woman died. The government report referred the matter to the police to take appropriate action against the hospital.

HE INSISTED TO PAY

King David witnesses the angel of the Lord bringing plague upon Israel because of David’s census. He begs the Lord to show mercy, and the angel stops over the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. The Lord commands David to build an altar on the site, and he approaches the owner to purchase the land. Even though Araunah offers the site to David for free, David insists upon paying full price.

  1. When has a hospital or its staff been especially kind to you or someone you know?
  2. As far as we know, this was the only time David ever witnessed an angel from God. How do you think it impacted him?
  3. What’s an offering you can bring to God that costs something of you (not just financially)?
