AS FAR AS VOYAGER 1 IS FROM VOYAGER 2

In 1977, NASA launched twin spacecraft to explore the outer planets of our solar system. The aptly named Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 completed their initial missions in 1989. Since then, they have been speeding away from the earth in different directions. Miraculously, both spacecraft continue to transmit data back to earth. They are the two manmade objects farthest from earth and also the two active manmade objects farthest from one another. In January 2025, Voyager 1 is 15.4 billion miles from earth and Voyager 2 is 12.3 billion miles from earth. But because they’re traveling on different trajectories, their distance from one another is roughly 16.6 billion miles. They started out as twins, but now they are as far apart as the east is from the west.

AS FAR AS THE EAST IS FROM THE WEST

Today’s text is a glorious psalm that soars to great heights to express the love of God for those who fear him. God’s love prompts him to distance our transgressions from us. If the span between east and west could be measured, then the distance would be how far our sins have been removed. Reverence of the Lord is wise indeed!

  1. What’s the farthest from home you have ever traveled?
  2. Which space mission is most memorable to you, and why?
  3. Why would God place distance between us and our transgressions?
