BROKEN RECORDS?

This year, NBA superstar LeBron James (40) is set to break two all-time records once considered unbreakable. If he remains healthy and plays this season as he has played in the past, he is expected to become the all-time leader both in number of games played and number of baskets made. The former record is currently held by the former Boston Celtics center, Robert Parish, who played in 1,611 games and retired in 1997. The latter record is held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who made 15,837 field goals before retiring in 1989. James played 70 games last season but needs only 49 to break Parish’s record, and 349 baskets to reach Abdul-Jabbar’s mark. He might break both records as early as February.

BROKEN COVENANT

This week’s reading contains God’s promise of a new covenant. A new covenant was necessary after the original covenant was broken—not by God but by the ancestors of Israel and Judah. The new covenant would be different, not prone to the same human weaknesses as the original agreement. God would grant forgiveness and write his law on the very hearts of his people.

  1. What record (in sports or another realm) has the appearance of being unsurpassable?
  2. What was the weakness in the Sinai Covenant between God and Israel?
  3. How might an original hearer have expected God to write instructions onto human hearts?
