LIFTED BY HELICOPTER

Last month, it was helicopters that provided a rescue of last resort to residents of some Alaskan towns. When the remnant of Typhoon Halong swerved off its predicted course and slammed into the southwestern coast of Alaska—bringing windspeeds over a hundred miles an hour—homes toppled in the wind or floated off their foundations in the flood. The storm displaced over a thousand people. Some sheltered in schools, but many evacuated to Bethel, the nearest sizable town, with a population of 6,500. And shelters were quickly overwhelmed. The area is nowhere near a highway system, preventing rescue and evacuation efforts. Fixed-wing aircraft couldn’t land amid all the damage, and thus the US Coast Guard helicopters had to evacuate people, six at a time.

LIFTED BY ROPE

When Jeremiah predicted the imminent fall of Jerusalem to Nebuchadnezzar’s forces, local officials gained King Zedekiah’s permission to silence the prophet. Rather than murder him in broad daylight, they threw Jeremiah into a cistern in the gatehouse courtyard. An assistant to the king, a foreigner named Ebed-Melek, exposed the plot that would soon kill Jeremiah. Fearing a public reaction, Zedekiah gave Ebed-Melek thirty men to rescue Jeremiah. They lifted the prophet from the pit using ropes, and he went on faithfully declaring the words of the Lord.

  1. How close have you ever been to a hurricane or other natural disaster?
  2. Why did King Zedekiah give conflicting orders about Jeremiah?
  3. What helps you to continue serving God faithfully when facing opposition or persecution?
